How to Properly Examine a Pre Roll

If you’re new here, welcome to Green Dragon Florida Dispensary’s blog page! Here, we talk about everything from marijuana slang words, to monthly top medical marijuana strains available across our Florida locations!

Today, we are talking about how to properly examine a pre roll prior to making a medical purchase. With Florida booming with medical dispensaries, finding a pre roll that fits your needs can be a challenge. There’s a lot of low-quality product out there, and many patients may have a difficult time choosing the best when everything looks good on the outside.

Here are seven key tips to take note of when looking at pre rolls for medical purchase:

Check to See if the Pre Roll Packaging is Sealed

The best parts of the marijuana plant are the flavorful, essential oils called terpenes, which can evaporate at room temperature. Some pre roll packaging containers don’t seal completely, so your terpenes might be leaking out from the tube (which you 100% do not want). A fresh pack that leaks will still taste good, but any marijuana product exposed to oxygen starts to degrade over time. This leaves for an experience that was once exciting to a patient, as a less than ideal.

Smell the Pre Roll Tube

OK, so you got a fresh, sealed pre roll. What does it smell like? Pop the top and take a nice, long inhale. The aroma emitting from the pre roll should smell inviting, enticing your mind to give it a try.

Try a Dry Hit

Take the pre roll out and try taking a few unlit puffs from the end. This is called a dry hit, and it's a great way to gauge how much flavor to expect once you're ready to medicate!

Inspect the Pre Roll

Mass-produced marijuana products are still pretty common. There are a lot of hands that touch the plant and paper to get those joints into your hands. When inspecting the preroll, try to:

  • Squeeze the pre roll to check its packing density.

  • Wiggle the crutch to see how firm the pack is near the tip.

  • Does the pre roll look beat up or nicely rolled?

  • Look for ‘angel kisses’ (patches of paper that are a different shade because the oil from the bud has seeped into the paper). Oil content is a good thing! Similar to when pizza leaves an oil stain on a paper plate—angel kisses are similar and desirable.

Time to Medicate!

Enough talk—give the pre roll the ultimate test. Spark it up with your Green Dragon lighter, or with a bit of hemp wick if you’re a purist, and get a good hot cherry going at the end. Take a five-second inhale, rotate, and repeat. The rotation prevents runs, and the short inhales keep the cherry from overheating. The pre roll should taste similar to how it smelled in the tube and during the dry hit, only better. A great pre roll will be lip-smacking good once you take an inhale.

Watch the Burn

Does the pre roll burn out and need relighting? Does it hold up to a little breeze coming from the humid Florida air? Is the ash white? Is there a ‘resin ring’ above the cherry burn? The burn can tell you a lot about how the pre roll was packed. The ash color can indicate what was burning. Many recreational consumers and medical patients believe white ash is a good sign, but it's just one indicator. A resin ring shows terpene content. All these details can affect the overall quality of a pre roll!
